Register for the (BWA) Level 3 Excise Practices & Procedures Qualification
The Level 3 Certificate in Excise Practices and Procedures (Alcohol) is an essential introduction and certification for anyone working in, or wishing to work in the alcohol excise arena.
This qualification is the first of its kind and aims to provide learners with the skills and supporting knowledge required by employers in excise. The qualification is appropriate for learners who have responsibility for the storage and movement of excise goods (alcohol) as part of their core work. The qualification will also support work-based learning within the industry.
The course has been reviewed and validated by HMRC
The course covers the five mandatory modules shown below:
- Introduction to Excise
- Authorisations and Guarantees for Excise Goods
- Receipt of Duty Suspended Excise Goods
- The Storage of Goods in the Excise Warehouse
- Removal of Goods from an Excise Warehouse

About the course
Created by The Bonded Warehousekeepers Association (BWA), in partnership with The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade, the qualification follows industry standards, which is ideal for:
- Individuals starting their journey in the excise industry
- Individuals currently working in the excise industry that wish to check and validate their knowledge and experience.
This course is accessed online through our Canvas learning platform where the course content is found and assessments are administered.
The learning is supported by a specialist tutor who delivers one online video lesson (up to one hour) per module, and can be contacted by students via online messaging.
Study Commitment: 121 hours (over 12 months)
Assessment method
- This course has a single ‘end-of-course’ 3,000 word assessment.
- Students can test their learning during their studies, by attempting a multiple-choice knowledge check at the end of each module.
- Students will be given the opportunity to practise and expand their assessment writing skills by completing a number of ‘interim assignments’. Though not mandatory, they provide a vital opportunity to receive feedback from their course tutor in preparation for their final assessment.
