Export controls and compliance regulations have become increasingly complex due to evolving UK and international trade laws, heightened security concerns, and geopolitical shifts. Businesses involved in global trade must ensure they adhere to UK customs procedures, export licensing requirements, and classification protocols to avoid financial penalties, shipment delays, and reputational damage.

No formal qualifications are required for this course. All candidates must be 16 years or older to be considered for direct entry to the award.
This qualification consists of four units of learning:

Understand the key principles of customs procedures and documentation required for international trade.

Identify and explain the role of regulatory bodies and legislation that govern import and export processes.

Demonstrate knowledge of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and how they affect trade.

Understand valuation methods and customs procedures for both imports and exports.

Explain the concept of export controls and their significance in international trade.

Understand the difference between military and dual-use goods and their classification under export controls.

Describe the process of obtaining export licences and understand the application requirements.

Demonstrate an understanding of due diligence, sanctions, and compliance as they relate to export licensing.

Identify the requirements for compliance with US export controls and other international regulations.

Understand the core principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors and their role in business.

Demonstrate the ability to integrate ESG strategies into business operations in line with regulatory requirements.

Identify the challenges businesses face in implementing ESG initiatives and how to overcome them.

Develop an action plan for ESG compliance and reporting within an organisation.

Understand how to classify goods accurately using the relevant commodity codes and classification systems.

Demonstrate knowledge of the UK Global Tariff and how to use it to classify products for export.

Identify and apply the general interpretative rules for commodity code classification.

Understand the relationship between export controls and product classification.
-
Demonstrate the ability to manage and maintain accurate commodity classifications for ongoing compliance.
The average time it will take a student to complete this qualification is 50 hours.
Each module of learning is covered in a four-hour online learning session starting at 9am and finishing by 1.00pm GMT. Students can choose to take each individual four-hour module at a date convenient to them, with bimonthly dates offered for each module.
On completion of the training days, candidates will engage in a further assessment module in order to achieve the qualification. This module is supported by a tutor and you will be required to successfully complete a scenario based assessment to pass.

All four modules and assessment must be taken within two years to complete this qualification. However, students are likely to finish within four - 12 months depending on their availability to attend the live online training sessions for each module.
On completion of the training days, candidates will engage in a further assessment module in order to achieve the qualification. This module is supported by a tutor and you will be required to successfully complete an assessment testing your knowledge of the course learning outcomes.
