Rules of Origin

Correctly ascertaining origin is crucial to ensuring your goods are tariffed correctly. 

To qualify for reduced or removed duties, importers need to comply with the rules of origin in the agreements they are trading under. This means you need to be able to prove the economic nationality – or ‘origin’ – in a way that satisfies the criteria set out. 

This course helps you to understand what you need to do to qualify for preferential tariffs and the proofs of origin you need to provide to do so, enabling your business to reduce duty costs. 

This course will also help you assess how origins impact US tariff exposure, how to apply the substantial transformation test and how origin planning can help mitigate the risks. 

Rules of origin are also key to leveraging Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). Free trade agreements – such as those the UK has secured with the EU, Australia and Japan – offer several opportunities for traders, and can help businesses optimise and diversify supply chains.
