Commenting on the latest US tariff announcements, director general of the Chartered Institute of Export and International Trade, Marco Forgione, said:
“This is further evidence of US President Donald Trump’s determination to reshape global trade around an ‘America First’ agenda, using tariffs as a tool to drive investment into the US and advance wider economic and geopolitical goals.
“Today’s UK trade figures show growth in non-EU exports, particularly to the US. This underlines the strength of the trading relationship between the UK and the US as well as the overall importance of the US market for British businesses. However, the ongoing tariff uncertainty runs the risk of undermining the strengthening partnership, ultimately affecting UK businesses and US consumers.
“Unfortunately, this is not the conclusion of President Trump’s tariff programme but just another step in the journey. The Chartered Institute provides support for British importers and exporters navigating a landscape where trade policy is increasingly shaped by these kinds of wider geopolitical objectives.”
